International Collaboration on Urban Water Management

International Collaboration on Urban Water Management

We are pleased to announce the formation of a major international research collaboration focused on sustainable urban water management. This partnership brings together our lab with leading research institutions from Germany, Singapore, and Japan to address pressing challenges in urban hydrology and water resource management.

Participating Institutions

  • Hydrology City Lab (Lead Institution)
  • Technical University of Berlin, Germany
  • National University of Singapore, Singapore
  • Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan

Research Focus Areas

The collaboration will focus on four key areas of urban water management:

  1. Climate-Resilient Urban Drainage Systems
Developing adaptive drainage infrastructure that can respond to changing precipitation patterns and extreme weather events.

  2. Smart Water Distribution Networks
Implementing IoT and AI technologies to optimize water distribution, reduce leakage, and improve water quality monitoring.

  3. Urban Water Reuse Strategies
Researching innovative approaches to water recycling and reuse in dense urban environments.

  4. Integrated Watershed Management
Creating holistic management frameworks that consider the entire urban watershed as an interconnected system.

Exchange Program

As part of this collaboration, we are establishing an international exchange program for researchers and students. Each year, the program will support:

  • 4 faculty exchanges (one from each institution)
  • 8 PhD student exchanges (two from each institution)
  • 2 international workshops (rotating between partner institutions)

The first exchange period will begin in January 2024, with our lab hosting two visiting PhD students from Berlin and Singapore.

Expected Outcomes

This five-year collaboration aims to produce:

  • Joint research publications in high-impact journals
  • Open-source software tools for urban water management
  • Policy recommendations for municipal governments
  • Educational materials for professional development in the water sector
  • A network of young researchers with international experience

Funding

The collaboration is supported by a $2.5 million grant from the International Water Research Foundation, with additional matching funds from each participating institution.

Get Involved

We are currently recruiting PhD students and postdoctoral researchers interested in participating in this international collaboration. Interested candidates should contact the lab director for more information about available positions and application procedures.

We look forward to the innovative solutions and knowledge that will emerge from this global partnership as we work together to address the water challenges facing cities around the world.
